Unit 9. Advanced. Windows Update (I)

When connecting with Windows Update, a message showing us that the software that is used by Windows Update is trying to install itself on our computer. This is why when starting up, a message like the one shown appears, letting us know that we should answer yes to the dialog boxes that may appear.

This is the case anytime that a program is trying to be installed through the Internet as a matter of security.

If you answer NO, the process of Windows Update will not be able to continue.

The first thing that we can do is let Windows show us the available updates. In order to do this, click on search updates and the next screen will appear.

On this screen we will select what types of updates we want to check. To do this we need to select one of the options on the left. Critical updates, Windows XP or Driver updates. We can also check the critical updates by clicking on Check and install updates.

Windows will begin searching on Internet. This process can take a few minutes, and meanwhile a screen like the one shown here will appear notifying you of the search process.

In any case, no update will be installed yet. Windows will first show us a screen to show the updates that are available.

If we have selected Critical Updates, Windows will show us the available updates. Each of the updates will show the title, size, and a description. There are also two buttons, Add or Remove. This allows us to add or remove the updates from the update list. Once we have checked all of the updates, we can install them by clicking install now, as we shall see on an upcoming screen.

Once the updates for Windows XP have been selected we will move on and install the updates. To do this, click on Check and install updates.

On the next screen we will see the total of all the types of updates that we have selected in our provisional list. On the upper right we can see the total space that the selected updates occupy. If we do not have a broadband conection it is suggested that you use smaller updates. This will avoid taking too long and losing the connection before the installation is finished.

We can still delete some updates by clicking Remove..

Once we are sure, click Install now.

Before the download process begins a dialog box appear.

Since we are going to install a component of Windows we need to accept a licence agreement. Click OK to begin the download; if you decline, the update will not be installed.

While the download is in process you will see a window that will show you the progress.

Once the installation has finished you will see a dialog box that will ask you if you want to restart now or later.

At the end of the process Windows will inform you that the updates have been installed.

By this point the Windows Update process has ended.

Nevertheless, if you want to see all of the updates done through Windows Update, click on See install history, and you will see the install history in table form.

For each installation done it shows you the State, Date, Description, and Origin.

Keep in mind that this list only records installations done with Windows Update. If you have uninstalled an installation done with Windows Update this list will not show it. Therefore it may happen that this list does not coincide with what you have installed at this time.

Remember that each time you start up your computer and there are updates available that you do not have installed, a message will appear next to the task bar so that you can initiate Windows Update if you wish to. You can also use the automatic update system.
