Objective.

 

Practice the different column operations availible in Excel2003.

Step by step exercise..

 

1 If Excel2003 is not open, open it in order to perform the exercise.

2 Open the Fruit sales book found in the Exercises folder in the course.

We are going to increase the width of columns B-H from the menu.

3 Select columns B-H.

4 Select the Format menu.

5 Select the Column option.

Another submenu opens..

6 Select the Width... option.

7 Write the width as 12.

8 Click on OK.

Observe the result.

We will now manually change the width of column A:

9 Situate the mouse pointer on the line situated to the right of column A's name. In the column header.

The pointer takes the shape of an arrow with two tips modificar ancho de columnas con ratón.

10 Maintaining the mouse button depressed, drag until we have the desired width in the box, that is, 16,00.

 

11 Release the mouse button.

Observe the result.

Lets suppose that we do not want the column width to be 16, but rather for it to adjust itself to the widest contents in the column.

 

12 Select column A.

13 Select the Format menu.

14 Select the Column option.

15 Select the Autofit selection option.

Observe how the width is reduced untill it has the necessary width for the text in thye cells to fit.

We are now going to perform the same operation on column H but without using the menu.

 

16 Select column H.

17 Situate the mouse pointer on the line situated to the right of column H's name. In the column header

18 Double click.

Observe the result.

Let's suppose that we now want to modify the width of all the columns in the sheet (except from those already modified) to 13 points.

 

19 Select the Format menu.

20 Select the Column option.

21 Select Standard width...

22 Write the width as 13.

23 Click on OK.

 

24 Close the workbook without saving the changes.
