Step by step exercise. Number cell format.

 Objective.
Differentiate between and use the different options to change the aspect of the numbers in Excel2003.
 Step by step exercise.
1 If Excel2003 is not open, open it in order to perform the exercise. 2 Open the Initial Fruit sales workbook found in the Exercises folder of the course. We are going to start by visualizing the kilos sold with 2 decimals. 3 Select the range B5:H12 . 4 Go to the Format menu. 5 Select the Cells... option. 6 Click on the Number tab if it is not already activated. 7 Click on the Number option. More options will appear in the part to the right. 8 In the Decimal places box, click on the upward arrow till it shows 2 (for 2 decimals). It can also be written directly in the box. 9 Click on OK. Although the whole range is seen with 2 decimals, the contents of the cell are the same as before, and we have only changed the way we visualize the cell. We are now going to put the thousand separator in the TOTAL column. 10 Select the range H5:H12. 11 Go to the Format menu. 12 Select the Cells... option. 13 Clic on the Number tab if it is not already activated. 14 Clic on the Number option in the Category box. 15 Activate the Use 1000 seperator box. 16 Clic on OK. We will now make it put the € currency symbol in the last cell. 17 Select the range H5:H12 . 18 Go to the Format menu. 19 Select the Cells... option. 20 Click on the Number tab if it is not already activated. 21 Select the Currency option in the Category box. Observe how the options for this category are 0 decimals and € symbol. (if these options are not activated, activate them now). 22 In the Decimal positions box, click on the upward arrow till it reaches 2 (for 2 decimals) If the € symbol is not here, insert it. 23 Click on OK. Observe the result. The Percentage symbol is also a format or aspect of the numbers. 24 Select cell B11 . 25 Go to the Format menu. 26 Select the Cells... option. 27 Click on the Number tab if it is not already activated. Observe how the the Percentage option appears selected in the Category box, with the options of 0 decimals which we can change. 28 Click on the General option in the Category box. 29 Click on OK. We can also change some options from the toolbar, but it is advisable to know how to use the menu as some options can modify the alignments and make some changes complicated. We will test it against the percentage format. If any button does not appear on the toolbar, drop down the arrow to the right of the toolbar - you might find the button here. 30 Select cell B11 if not already selected. 31 Clic on the button on the toolbar. Observe the result. 32 Save the workbook with the same name as before. 33 Close the workbook.
