Step by step exercise. Searching for data in a table.

Objective.

Practise the procedures for searching for data in a table with Access2003.

1 If Access is not open, open it to be able to carry out the exercise.

2 Open the Classes.mdb database, found in My Documents in the hard drive.

We will start by changing the birthday of one student, namely Anne.

1 Open the Students table in Datasheet view by double clicking on it.

2 Click on the field where we want to search, Student Name.

3 Click on the button on the toolbar.

The Find or Replace dialogue box will appear.

4 In the Find What: box, wrtite the value Anne.

5 In the Match: box, select the option Whole field as only this value will have been written in the field.

6 Click on the Find next button to begin the search.

Access will have placed itself in the desired record.

As we do not want to carry out any other searches we will close the dialogue box Find and Replace.

7 Click on the Cancel button.

Now we will change the date of birth, therefore:

8 Position yourself in the date of birth field.

9 Write the new value, 08/15/76.

We are also going to change the address of the student whose surname is Martinez. But we do not know if he names Martin or Martinez, so we will look for the surnames that begin with Martin.

1 Open the Student table in Datasheet view if not already open..

2 Click on the field where we will find the value to look for, Student Surname.

3 Click on the button on the taskbar.

The dialogue box Find or replace will appear.

Haz clic sobre el botón de la barra de herramientas.

4 In the Find What: box write the value to look for, Martin.

5 In the Match: box, select the Start of field option as we are looking for the surname, and this field will start with Martin.

6 Click on the Find next button to begin the search.

Access will have placed itself in the desired record, but it is not the one we are looking for.

7 Click on the Find next button.

Here is the student we are looking for!

8 Click on the Cancel button.

Now we are going to edit the address, so:

9 Position yourself in the address field.

10 Write the new value, 21 Casinos rd..

11 Close the table.
