Step by step exercise. Designing forms
To practice the size adjustment and design alignment in forms.
We will now edit the design of our Courses Tabular form.
1 Position yourself in the Forms tab of the Database window if you are not already there.
2 Click on the Courses Tabular form.
3 Click on the button in the Database window.
As we are going to enlarge various controls, we will firstly space out the controls in order to work more comfortably.
4 Select all the controls by dropping down the Edit menu, and then selecting the Select all option.
5 Drop down the Format menu, then Horizontal spacing, then Increase.
6 Perform step 5 various times so as to leave enough space between each control.
Now as the headers of the Course code and dates do not fit on the tag, we are going to widen the tags. We could select each one and extend it using the size controls, but there is a faster method.
7 Click on the Course code label so that it remains selected.
8 Press the Shift key and without letting go click on the Start date and Finish date labels, all three labels will remain selected.
9 Drop down the Format menu, then Size, and select the To fit option. You will see that the labels have been made wider and that we can now see the entire title of the label.
We now see that the Course code label is wider than the control that will contain the course codes, we will leave them the same width.
We will now select the label and the textbox at the same time.
10 Move the cursor over the Detail section below the Text box corresponding the course code, until the cursor takes the form.
11 Left clic and maintain on the mouse, draging the mouse upwards we see how a rectangle is being drawn, and when the rectangle touches the two controls that we want to select release the mouse button and we see how the rectangle disappears whilst the two controls remain selected. This is a fast and easy way to select various adjacent controls.
12 Next drop down the Format menu, then Size, and select the To Widest option. Both controls now have the same width but are not aligned. Do not deselect.
13 Drop down the Format menu, then Align, and select the Left option. Both controls are now perfectly aligned.
We will do the same with the dates.
14 Move the cursor over the Detail section below the textbox corresponding the Start date, until the cursor takes the form.
15 Left clic and maintain on the mouse, dragin the mouse toward the top right, and when the rectangle includes all four controls that you want to select let go of the mouse button.
16 Next drop down the Format menu, then Size, and select the To Widest option. All four controls now have the same width, but are not aligned. We can not align them all at the same time, and so we will need to first align the Start date and after the Finish date.
All four controls are still selected, we will now deselect the Finish date.
17 Press the Shift key and maintain, click on the Finish date textbox and its tag. Now only the Start date controls are selected.
18 Drop down the Format menu, then Align, and select the Left option.
19 Now select the other two controls.
20 Repeat step 18.
We will now adjust the height of all the fields in the detail line.
21 Move the cursor over the left part of the detail section until it takes the form.
22 Clic and select all the line controls.
23 Next drop down the Format menu, then Size, and select the To Tallest option. All our controls now have the same height.
24 Next drop down the Format menu, then Align, and select the Top option. Both controls are now perfectly aligned.
25 Save the changes and close the form.
